padDr. Friedbert Pflueger

Born in Hanover on 6 March 1955; Lutheran; married to Prof. Margarita Mathiopoulos.

In 1973 obtained Abitur (school-leaving certificate giving right of entry to university) at Schiller School, Hanover; studied political science, public and constitutional law and economics in Göttingen, Bonn and Harvard (USA). From 1974 to 1975 research assistant in the Department of Economics, Göttingen University. In 1980 obtained M.A. and in 1982 doctorate (Dr. phil.).

From 1981 to 1984 assistant to the Governing Mayor of Berlin, latterly in charge of his private office. From 1984 to 1989 press spokesman of the Federal President. Numerous publications, above all on foreign policy issues. Books published include: Die Menschenrechtspolitik der USA (U.S. human rights policy; 1983); Richard von Weizsäcker. Ein Portrait aus der Nähe (Richard von Weizsäcker. A close-up portrait; 1990); Ein Planet wird gerettet (A planet is saved; 1992); Deutschland driftet. Die konservative Revolution entdeckt ihre Kinder (Germany adrift. The conservative revolution discovers its children; 1994); Die Zukunft des Ostens liegt im Westen (The future of the East lies in the West; 1994); Der Friede bleibt bedroht - Europäische Sicherheitspolitik im 21. Jahrhundert (The threat to peace persists - European security policy in the 21st century; August 1998).

Member of the board of trustees of the Theodor Heuss Foundation, the St. Barbara Foundation (protection against land mines - aid for mine victims) and the Oro Verde Tropical Forest Foundation. From 1991 to 1998 chairman of the German-Polish Society, Bonn.

In 1971 joined the Christian Democratic Union (CDU); from 1977 to 1978 federal chairman of the Association of Christian Democrat Students (RCDS); from 1976 to 1978 deputy chairman of the European Democrat Students (EDS); from 1977 to 1985 member of the federal executive of the Young Union (youth section of the CDU/CSU); since 1991 deputy chairman of the Federal Committee on Foreign Policy of the CDU of Germany. Member of the Bundestag since 1990 (Defence Committee and Committee on Foreign Affairs), from 1994 to 1998 disarmament policy spokesman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag. Since June 1998 deputy chairman of the Lower Saxony association of the CDU. Chairman of the Bundestag Committee on the Affairs of the European Union since November 1998. Since September 1999 chairman of the Federal Committee on Foreign and Security Policy of the CDU. Since 11 April 2000 member of the federal executive committee of the CDU.

Jan. 30 - National Assembly of France endorses NATO enlargement

On 29 January 2004, the Lower Chamber of the French Parliament - the National Assembly - approved the draft law on the ratification of NATO Accession Protocols of the 7 invited countries, including Latvia. The vote was unanimous.

The French Senate is expected to review the draft law on 5 February.
